S64: Trend Study

To pretest various scales (19) of areas which appear to be important to morale and to intercorrelate these scales.

a. The specific scale areas covered in the questionnaires are:

  5. Attitude toward Britain, China, Russia
  6. Attitude toward officers and noncoms

  11. Job satisfaction
  12. Desire for combat
  13. Self confidence
  14. Vindictiveness
  15. Post war army
  16. Feeling of Army interest

b. Additional attitude areas included are:

  1. Branch preference
  2. Longevity of war
  3. Attitude toward training
  4. Attitude toward AWOL
  5. Furloughs and passes

c. To collect attitude data to be used as a base for making trend comparisons in later studies

Sample Description

a. A cross section of 4,246 white enlisted men from 21 ASF, AGF, and AAF installations throughout continental United States

S-64 is made up of two sub samples (1st and 2nd cross section sub samples). Since S-63 E is made up of the 3rd subsample of overall cross section, S-64 may be combined with S-63 E to increase the size of the sample to 6,371 cases and the result will be an overall cross section sample of the Army.

b. 148 cases of AWOL men were given questionnaire S-64 also.
