Sample Description
S-63A: A cross section of 1,113 white enlisted men from eleven ASF, AGF, and AAF installations throughout Continental United States. S-63 is comprised of one sub-sample (1st sub-sample cross section).
S-63B: A cross-section of 2,044 white enlisted men from 21 ASF, AGF, and AAF installations throughout the Continental United States. S-63B has two sub-samples (2nd and 3rd sub-sample cross section).
S-63C: A cross section of 3,164 white enlisted men from 32 ASF, AGF, and AAF installations throughout the Continental United States. S-63C has three sub-samples (1st, 2nd & 3rd cross section sub-samples).
S-63D: A cross section of 3,139 white enlisted men from 32 ASF, AGF, and AAF installations throughout the Continental United States. S-63D has three sub-samples (1st, 2nd, and 3rd cross section sub samples).
S-63E: A cross section of 2,125 white enlisted men from eleven ASF, AGF, and AAF installations throughout the Continental United States. S-63E comprises one sub-sample (3rd sub-sample cross section).
S-63F: 638 white enlisted men from 9 camps who have been absent without leave.
S-63G: 1,473 white enlisted men from 4 camps. This sample is made up of Air Corps men, Rangers and Airborne Infantry only and represents a group of men who are highly motivated toward combat as compared to AWOL men. (See S-63F.)
Sample Method
S-63A was part of an omnibus study. It was administered in the field by interleaving with four other questionnaires. The cases in S-63A by themselves constitute a cross section of the Army (first cross section). However, in order to make a more detailed analysis of some of the questions asked in S-63A, the same questions were also asked in S-63B. S-63B has 2,044 cases and is made up of two separate cross section sub-samples (2nd and 3rd cross section samples). Therefore, for purposes of more detailed analysis S-63A & B can be thrown together and together they represent an over-all cross section of the Army (3,157 cases). Certain other questions, calling for still greater refinement in analysis, are carried in every questionnaire in the omnibus study.
S-63D was part of an omnibus study. It was administered in the field by interleaving with four other questionnaires. The cases in S-63D by themselves constitute a cross section of the Army. However, in order to make a more detailed analysis of some of the questions asked in S-63D, the same questions were also asked in S-63C and other questionnaires. Therefore, for purposes of more detailed analysis S-63C & D can be thrown together to give a total of 6,303 cases and the two studies together also represent a cross section of the Army. (Both S-63C and S-63D are made up of three sub-samples and if either one is combined with S-63A, B, E or S64, the resulting sample will have an over weighting of certain of the sub-samples). Certain other questions, calling for still greater refinement in analysis, are carried in every questionnaire in the omnibus.
S-63E was part of an omnibus study. It was administered in the field by interleaving with four other questionnaires. The cases in S-63E by themselves constitute a cross section of the Army. However, in order to make a more detailed analysis of some of the questions asked in S-63E, the same questions were also asked in certain other of the questionnaires. If S-63E is combined with S-64 the total will constitute an over-all cross section of the Army. If S-63E is combined with S-63C or S-63D, the resultant total sample will be overweighted in one of the sub-samples of S-63C and S-63D, namely the third sub-sample.
